Pet Obedience Classes

Riverside offers two pet obedience classes that will help you teach your companion dog obedience for real life. In Beginner I, you will teach your dog the basics, using positive techniques. Beginner II will help you move beyond the basics and prepare your dog to be a canine good citizen.

Beginner I

The Beginner I pet obedience class uses positive training techniques to teach obedience for real life. Whether your dog is just starting its training or in need of remedial education, this class is for you.

We will use play, praise, and lots of treats to teach your dog the basics of “pet etiquette” and to help them become mindful and well-mannered. We will also address any behavioral issues that have cropped up at home. This group class is for all dogs 16 weeks or over.Your dog will learn how to:

  • walk on a leash without pulling
  • sit and stay
  • lie down and stay
  • come quickly when called

On the first night of class, we will provide and fit all dogs with an obedience collar. We will show you how to use them correctly. Each week, we will check the collar’s fit and adjust it as necessary.

This class is not appropriate for dogs displaying dog aggression.

Beginner II

Prerequisite: Beginner I

When you and your dog are ready to move beyond the obedience basics, the Beginner II class is for you. This pet obedience class will test and build on all you learned in the Beginner I class. We will cover stays and recalls with added distractions to ensure your dog’s behavior is bullet-proof. We will also work on loose lead heeling.

At the completion of the course, your dog will be fully prepared to test for the AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.

I have taken puppy kindergarten, obedience and agility classes from Joan for about two years. She is a very patient and consistent instructor. I am a better handler thanks to Joan. Love, love her classes.

There are a lot of dog trainers out there. What I look for is a trainer who not only has good technical skills but also knows how to make it fun for us and our dogs. Joan gets it, dog training is always fun with Joan.

I sincerely enjoy connecting with my pets and they enjoy going to classes as well. My dogs get all excited when they see the “training bag” come out of hiding. We have taken many classes at Riverside including Obedience, Agility, and all-day Seminar classes. I really enjoy the camaraderie. What a great group of folks and dogs!
